Ken’s Bridge
On Sunday 16th May a bridge was built over a beck on Beeston Common SSSI. This bridge is the first of a series of bridges which will be upgraded on the Common and forms part of the ‘Sheringham Trials’ project set up under ‘SheringhamPlus’, the regeneration group that preceded the Upcher Community Partnership.

The bridge was built by Francis and Edward Farrow of the Beeston Common Management Group primarily to allow the safe crossing of the DR mower, which is used in keeping paths clear of overgrowth.

BCMG was founded in 1983 under the leadership of Ken Durrant, the first Hon. Warden for the Common appointed by Sheringham Town Council. BCMG therefore thought that it was a fitting tribute to name the bridge ‘Ken’s Bridge’ in honour of a great champion and enthusiast of the Common. Ken retired from the position of Hon. Warden in February 2004 having helped considerably with the transition of ‘a piece of wasteland’ into the internationally acclaimed ‘Special Area of Conservation’. In 1996 the site also received an SSSI award from the then English Nature (Natural England) – a first for Norfolk.

Sadly Ken passed away in his 90th year on April 28th, but his name will be forever linked with the Common not only in what he achieved but also by the simple bridge, which will also allow many people to follow more easily in his footsteps.
